How much solution does a carpet extractor use per square metre?

A portable extractor typically uses 0.1-0.2 litres per m², while a truckmount uses 0.15-0.25 litres per m². Encapsulation machines use much less — around 0.05-0.1 litres per m². Heavily soiled carpets require more solution.

Should I always pre-spray carpets?

Yes, for most jobs. Pre-spraying allows the cleaning chemical to dwell on the carpet fibres and break down soil before extraction. It significantly improves cleaning results, especially on moderate to heavily soiled carpets. Skip it only for very light maintenance cleans.

What dilution ratio should I use?

Always follow the manufacturer recommendation on the chemical label. Common ratios are 1:20 for heavy soil, 1:40 for standard cleaning, and 1:80 for maintenance. Using too much chemical can leave residue that attracts dirt faster.

Can I mix different cleaning chemicals?
