Should I rub or blot a stain?

Always blot, never rub. Rubbing spreads the stain sideways and pushes it deeper into the fibres. Blot firmly with a clean white cloth or paper towel, working from the outside of the stain inward. Turn the cloth frequently to use a clean area.

Why does stain age matter so much?

Fresh stains sit on the surface and have not bonded with the fibres. Over hours and days, the stain penetrates deeper and chemical bonds form with the fabric. Set or dried stains may have permanently altered the fibre colour, making full removal much harder.

Can I use bleach on carpet stains?

Household bleach will remove the carpet colour along with the stain. Only use oxygen-based (percarbonate) bleach products specifically designed for carpet use, and always test in a hidden area first. Professional oxidising spotters are safer than domestic bleach.

Why use cold water for blood stains?

Blood contains protein. Heat causes protein to coagulate and bind permanently to fibres (like cooking an egg). Always use cold water and enzyme-based products for blood, egg, milk, and other protein-based stains.
