Why does water hardness affect detergent dosing?

Hard water contains calcium and magnesium ions that react with detergent, reducing its cleaning power. In hard water areas you need more detergent to achieve the same cleaning result. In soft water areas you can reduce the dose and save money.

How do I find out my water hardness?

Your water company publishes hardness data by postcode on their website. You can also buy test strips from hardware shops. Hardness is measured in parts per million (ppm) or degrees Clark. Generally, the south and east of England have hard water, while Scotland and Wales are softer.

Can I use less detergent in soft water?

Yes, in soft water areas (under 60 ppm) you can typically use 20-30% less detergent than the manufacturer recommendation. This saves money and reduces chemical residue in fabrics and on surfaces.

Medium (61-120 ppm): 0.7-1.0x standard dose

Very hard (181-300 ppm): 1.25-1.5x standard dose
