How high can a water-fed pole reach?

Standard water-fed poles reach 10-12 metres (3-4 storeys). Extended heavy-duty poles can reach 15-20 metres (5-6 storeys) but become heavy and difficult to control. Carbon fibre poles are lightest at height. Beyond 6 storeys, alternative access methods are usually needed.

When should I use a ladder vs a water-fed pole?

Ladders are suitable for ground floor and first floor windows (up to about 4m) where there is firm, level ground. Water-fed poles are safer for 2+ storey work as you stay on the ground. The HSE recommends water-fed poles over ladders wherever possible for window cleaning at height.

What qualifications do I need for working at height?

All window cleaners working at height should have working at height training (typically a 1-day course). For MEWP (cherry picker) operation, an IPAF licence is required. For rope access, IRATA Level 1 qualification is minimum. Ladder use should follow HSE guidelines and a risk assessment should be completed for every job.
